As a dark skinned woman, I’ve had to deal with negative perceptions of African beauty from a very young age. Not only was there a huge lack of representation of women in the media who looked like me, but the most hurtful experiences came from people within my own community.
MISS REPRESENTED is a photo series that fights ideas of colorism by celebrating Afrocentric beauty, body positivity, sisterhood and self-esteem. The women in this campaign share how skin tone bias has affected their personal and professional lives and how these experiences have helped to shape their identity.
For centuries Black women around the globe have been misrepresented. My hope is that these stories and visuals will help shift the perception of Afrocentric beauty around the world and evoke pride in women who have been negatively affected by colorism. This project will travel the world sharing their stories.
